The Weight of Melanin
“As African Americans, we are conscious of the way we are treated and viewed by our communities.” These works serve as a reminder of who we have leading our country. I used quotes from Trump himself to show who he has been and continues to be throughout the years before and during his term. My goal is to spark a discussion in my viewers on who we want making decisions for us all and through his words what it’s like to be a minority in the U.S.A. I believe we as a people get caught up in social media and forget that we only see what they want to broadcasts to us. I want people to see beyond the surface and make decisions for themselves. In other words “stay woke”. The African American figure is not represented in art enough. I believe we are going into an age where more colored figures will be represented within modern art as we revisit the history that was ignored. I used the red and grey tones from my observations of past propaganda and President Trump’s own political campaign ads. These quotes are only scratching the surface that there is still a lot of change to go for us all to be equal. We have stigmas and stereotypes attached to our image. Things are better than before, but there is still a lot of change to be had. We are all beautiful in our own way. Love yourself. Love your neighbor. Spread a better message than our president has.
